Competition Information
What is competition?Competition is the opportunity for your child to learn a dance, as either part of a group, or as a solo or duo, that will be entered into competition in the spring at various venues throughout the lower mainland. How do I sign up for this?First, you must speak to your teacher, to discuss the best option for you. Would you like to do a solo, or a duo? Do you know what dance style you would like to do it in? Does your teacher have time to work on it with you? Once you have discussed this, you will fill out the “competition entry request form” (found in the waiting room or below on this page) and submit it to the office. |

When do I practice&how much time is involved?Your teacher will set up a schedule of practice times that is convenient for both of you. For a solo/ duo, each student is given 5 hours of time with the teacher to learn choreography and “clean” the routine. Many teachers start the choreography in October and will work with the student until February. The routines will be “finished” by February as we have our “Dance Extravaganza” at that time, which will show case all competition dances. What is Dance Extravaganza?“Dance Extravaganza” is held at the Surrey Arts Centre on a Sunday afternoon in February. All students who are competing, whether in a group, a comp class, or a solo / duo will be performing that afternoon. It gives them an opportunity to be on stage, in front of an audience (full of friends and family) prior to the start of the competition season. It also gives family members the chance to see the students dance. Competitions may be held during the week, or at times that are not convenient for all family members, so this is a wonderful opportunity to see the kids, and all the other fantastic Panorama dancers. Our PYC group also performs their show during this great afternoon of dance - and we welcome all Panorama families to come out and support this afternoon. |

When / where are the competitions?
Competitions are held throughout the lower mainland during the spring, usually March - May. Please talk to your teacher regarding which competitions she would like you to enter. The dates / locations will be posted on the bulletin board and on our website as they become available. The competitions inform us of dates and venues in the fall. Exact dates/ times are not given out until a few weeks prior to the start of the competition. Once we have these times, the information will be posted in our waiting rooms as well as on our website. If you know of any conflict with dates - ie: family vacation, sporting tournaments etc., please do not register for this competition.
When should I arrive at the Competition venue?
Please check with your teacher regarding arrival times, but generally 45 minutes prior to your dance time is common. This will give the student enough time to meet the teacher and get warmed up. Please arrive in costume with hair and make up already done. If you plan on doing this at the theatre you will need to allow extra time for this, prior to meeting your teacher. Please be aware that there is not always space to do this at the venues, and the backstage / dressing room areas are crowded and very busy.
What about a costume?
Costumes are only included if your child is enrolled in a competition class. Anything done outside of regular class time does not include a costume and is the parents' responsibility. Many times a costume can be used from a previous year / dance. Talk to your teacher to see if she has any suggestions, or ask at the office if there is anything suitable that can be rented for the season. Parents who sew may wish to make the costume. If you would like the costume made but don’t sew, we can give you the name of a couple people who may be able to make the costume for you.
